You bet and here’s why.
The first question just about every new web design client asks me is – “How long will it take to get my site live?” I always answer – “That depends. Where are you with your content?”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a project full-steam ahead just to have it fizzle out weeks later because the client had not completed the content. I’ve even had sites that were completely designed that got shelved just because design was put ahead of the words.
So, what do I recommend to a small business owner or entrepreneur as they are about to embark on the creation of their first site? Here goes….
First, take the time to sit down and plan out your site. Every page. What pages do you need? Why do you need them? Where will that content come from? Will you be writing it? Is someone else in your company responsible for writing it?
Second, if you don’t know who will be writing the content…..get some help! I work with a great writer that I bring in on projects when the owners have been honest with themselves and realize this task is beyond them. Just about any small business person I have ever sat down with can talk passionately for hours about their business. However, sit them down at the blank screen of their computer and they just freeze up. We take that pressure away by setting up time to interview our clients, get them talking, ask them questions while we take notes. Then that great writer of mine takes all of that fantastic information and puts it all together into text tailor made for their site and their business. Sounds a whole lot easier, huh?
But Mike you ask, won’t that cost more? Of course. But it’s completely worth it. We start the site development with a great game plan. We have a road map and each stop on that map has killer content that tells our story. To me, that’s the best money you can spend…. next to photography, but I’ll write about that in another post.
