My Business in a 4′ x 2′ Space

I was thinking the other day about how much has changed for me as a graphic designer since I began my career. We were using a Mac to set type, but we just couldn’t do the things we do today.  I also used a Stat Camera to prepare mechanicals, enlarge logos, create film for the press. My computer was huge, my monitor even bigger and super heavy. We had lots of paper files. File cabinets with every drawer filled, flat files for all of the mechanicals. It was a different world. And, I’m not that old!

So as I was looking at my very small and very empty desk today, I realized that all of my files are in the computer and/or out on the web. No more mechanicals. Just lots of files tucked neatly away, ready to grab whenever I need them. I work with DropBox and CrashPlan. My business is run with QuickBooks online. I don’t even print anything out for my accountant at tax time. He logs in and gets what he needs.

I’ve been doing this for just about 25 years. I can’t wait to see what my desk looks like in maybe 10, 15 or 20 years from now. Maybe it won’t even be a desk. Who knows?

How has your business changed? Where is it heading in the future? How can you keep your business relevant as time marches on?

Only time will tell. Have a great day.
