Headway 4 is on the way!

As a visual designer it has always been my goal to find a web design tool that allows me to visually create web sites without ever touching the code, the css, the javascript, etc. So far, it hasn’t happened. I can hear all the web design purists screaming already. Code first, compliant html, css, write your own code, blah, blah, blah. I get it. That is still the best way to build a site as far as getting clean code, but it’s just not the best way for many, many talented visual artists.

So, what have I found that works for me? By far Headway Themes is the best tool I’ve found for building sites using WordPress. And the good news is that the long awaited Headway 4 is almost here. I’ve spent some time with it the last few days and I have to say there are some great new features. As with any major update to software there are the expected bugs and quirks, but the team at Headway is working hard to iron them out.

No date for release has been provided yet, but we are currently working with Release Candidate 2 and the team says we’re getting very close. As soon as it is out and ready to roll, I will do a review of the product with some screen shots. For now, I’ll keep testing it and trying to break it order to understand it and use it to it’s fullest.

Happy designing to you all!

Let’s talk about hacking….

Let’s talk about hacking….

Why not? Everyone’s doing it. We might as well talk about it. So, if you’ve ever read any of my posts, you probably know that www.mikesmull.com was really just a place to build out new client sites, experiment with plugins and try out some new things in WordPress that I’d read about. I finally cleaned… Continue Reading

Why is this site so…

Plain? Black and White? Minimal? There are several reasons. Let me explain… First, I have in recent years been drawn more and more to minimalism. I have always had a bit of minimalism in me. I don’t like a lot of furniture or stuff in a room. My wife always says if it were up… Continue Reading

Another GoDaddy Gotcha!

I just recently learned that GoDaddy.com does not offer any type of backup utility in their control panel. This is typically not a problem for me because I don’t use their hosting. However, some of my clients do. We were having an issue with a great Email Form Processor called MachForm that we’ve been using without… Continue Reading

My Business in a 4′ x 2′ Space

I was thinking the other day about how much has changed for me as a graphic designer since I began my career. We were using a Mac to set type, but we just couldn’t do the things we do today.  I also used a Stat Camera to prepare mechanicals, enlarge logos, create film for the… Continue Reading

Planting Seeds for Growth

Planting Seeds for Growth

Today I planted my summer garden. What does that have to do with small business and web design. Good question. Here’s what I was thinking about as I planted this afternoon. With every small addition to your website, you plant new seeds for growth. New blog posts, news, updates, new product information…. whatever it is,… Continue Reading

The Website Funnel

Why does your small business have a website? No, really, what is the purpose of your site? I work with many clients that offer very specific products or services. They may do many things, but their business is really based around a few main areas. But so often they want to fill their home pages with… Continue Reading
